But...are you and/or your belongings really safe?? A recent article says those hotel room door locks are NOT as secure as you might think!
I do a fair amount of travelling, so I was alarmed by a recent article which appeared on the
Forbes website (7/23/12) which discussed a presentation at the BlackHat USA 2012 security
conference.
(The (Black Hat Briefings are a series of
highly technical information security conferences that bring together thought
leaders from all facets of the infosec world)
It is reported that approximately four to five million Onity HT locks are installed in hotels worldwide accounting for over half of all the installed hotel locks and can be found in approximately a third of all hotels. Source: Fireman's Fund RiskAdvisor
The presentation allegedly revealed a
vulnerability of this lock using nominally priced products that can be
purchased over the counter from electronics stores.
Until the problem is resolved will the hotels in
question use enhanced security to keep you safe? Who knows, but knowledge is
key.
Now that you know -- it’s up to YOU to do some
investigation BEFORE you just accept that you and your belongings are safe when
you lock that hotel room door.
Worth knowing how they get in?
