"You didn't build that" - the (fake) outrage continues

There continues to be outrage over the comments from President Obama that somehow you don’t really own what you have earned, but rather that the government does.  Frankly, I believe that the outrage is manufactured by the Romney campaign in an effort to continue with its distortion of what President Obama said in a recent campaign speech (after all Gov Romney has said the very same thing in past speeches)

The question was put to David Brooks in his column IHT Global Opinion.
I loved the way David answered the question in a very thoughtful and respectful manner,  making a strong case for "village building" and that we all have a role.

Here's the question as it appeared in the Op Ed

Dear Mr Opinion Guy:

Over the past few years, I’ve built a successful business. I’ve worked hard, and I’m proud of what I’ve done. But now President Obama tells me that social and political forces helped build that. Mitt Romney went to Israel and said cultural forces explain the differences in the wealth of nations. I’m confused. How much of my success is me, and how much of my success comes from forces outside of me?
Confused in Columbus.

Nman is aislan
by John Donne

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee
