"You didn't build that" A distorted American Dream

“You Didn’t Build That”

This is a quote made by President Barack Obama during a campaign speech in Roanoke, Virginia on July 13, 2012.

The quote was intended to point out the government-funded tools that entrepreneurs have at their disposal and emphasize the role government plays in fostering the growth of American businesses.

No sooner than the words had left the lips of President Obama than this soundbite was quickly disseminated across the conservative political blogosphere.

This began a heated and often acrimonious debate on income taxes and other economic policy issues.

Here's how the quote appeared on Fox News the next day:
July 14, 2012 just might be the tipping point of this presidential election–and perhaps an important sea change in our political culture.
That’s the day Americans woke up to the real meaning and significance of President Obama’s remarks in Roanoke on the 13th, that “if you have a business, you didn’t build that.”

Here’s the entire quote:
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.
President Obama concluded his speech with these words:
"So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the G.I. Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together."
I don't know what is happening to this country and why it has somehow become acceptable in our current political environment to pick and choose portions of a statement and/or sentence and apply a completely different meaning to it.

Politics has sunk to a new low. It has become "winning at any cost"  In fact, only recently Mitt Romney falsely accused President Obama of gutting welfare reform, imposing increased taxes on the middle class and suing to restrict military voting. None of which are true.  And, Why is it acceptable for Joe Wilson, a member of Congress, to shout at the President "you lie" or for Mitt Romney's campaign manager to call Harry Reid is a "dirty liar"?

I think it is despicable. Where will it end?

With all this hateful rhetoric going on in Washington (most with the intent of dividing people -  who by the way, are actuality more alike than they are different) it comes as no surprise that the hate speech, intolerance and acceptance of "anything goes" has spilled over into the general population with many of our citizens picking up guns and turning them on other citizens.
