Yesterday I bought a pair of leggings. It's my first pair (Yes, believe it). I heard that in fashion, if you participated in a trend the first time around you are supposed to skip it if it comes back around. While it is true that I was technically "alive" the first time around I didn't participate because I thought my legs were way too skinny and frankly I was just skinny all over (I can finally see that clearly). So, does that make me ineligible to wear leggings this time around?
Although I am no longer a "skinny bitch", my legs have not gotten much bigger. My major consideration now is my age. I hate to admit it but, I have finally reached the age where I actually had to consult the Googleto find out if something I wanted to wear was age appropriate. There really isn't much fashion advice out there for women over 50 and no real products provided for us either (altho contrary to popular belief, WE are the ones with the bulk of the disposable income, not the 18-35 yr olds).
I saw on a recent Oprah show that leggings can be worn at any age. Cool, that's really great encouragement, but I'm not so sure that when I'm 80 I want to be sporting a pair of leggings and a little sweater. The thought....well never mind. Anyway, my Google search found that opinions on this subject were all over the map. Leggings have always been polarizing.
I guess there are ways to wear leggings and there are ways to wear leggings.
I did find a few legging guidelines on a site called Fashion Over 50. Basically the rules are: Don't wear your leggings for pants. Think of them like tights. Don't wear them with heels (aging hooker look) or Mini skirts (leave that to the teens), no bulky shoes and you never, I repeat NEVER, let your tushie show (that means no short tops). We've all witnessed the woman in leggings with the dimpled butt. You'll find an example of her standing in every check out line in every supermarket across America.
I've read that the appropriate look would be to pair the leggings with a tunic top (maybe belted) or over a skirt or dress (thigh length or longer) with a cute pair of flats or boots. Keep the color dark, like black, navy or brown.
OMG I just saw where stirrup pants have also made a comeback. ~cringes~
I've become pretty daring in my old age so, when I finally figure it out, I'll be sure to post a picture.
Stay Tuned!

I LOVE LOVE leggings. Especially during meal times -- allows for tummy expansion. I, too, NEVER show my bum. I don't have one so it just looks really ugly. Another tip -- you can double up on leggings in case it's chilly out. And I think it gives me extra support to keep my jello legs from jiggling when I walk.
No way will I be wearing stirrups ever again.
As for the leggings, you and my mom are born in the same year. She wears them with long tops. (Tho I wish she had your fashion sense. She still has a lot of clothes from when I was young. *sigh*)
I no longer wear the long leggings but I sometimes wear the ones that come right below the knee with a baby doll dress (that I wear as a top).
If I can find a pic of me wearing it, I'll tag you in FB so you can see it. :)
