"Anonymous will not tolerate a BART policy banning cellphone use or excluding protesters from the platforms," reads a statement by the group. "We will settle for nothing less than a policy permitting non-disruptive political activity inside a rail station, as mandated by the 1967 California Supreme Court decision. The right to free speech does not end at the turnstile. We believe the entire country is a free speech zone, and that is what makes America great."
There was another protest scheduled for today at 5:00. I took the train home from Montgomery station at 4:30, which is my usual time. Aside from the massive crowds and the very visible Bart "police" everything else was normal. I crowded into a packed car and made the quick 15 ride to my stop. I will say that it was hotter than molasses in there though. I used my phone to send a text message while coming through the transbay tube. I got an error message about being unable to process a data message or something to that effect. Once out of the tube the message went right through.
Personally, I am against Bart turning off cell access. I believe in free speech. Today they turn off the cell phones in Bart and what will it be tomorrow? In this time where we are facing the erosion of our rights as US citizens, I think someone has to stand up and speak out. Trying to silence people and force a disbandment of groups marching peacefully with signs will not change the fact that Bart needs to do something about the trigger happy employees who masquerade as "police".
