Today I took the plunge. I bought my 1st bottle of Wheat Grass powder. I’ve been talking about doing this for quite a while but was undecided about whether to take the fresh liquid juice or the powder.
Yesterday I stopped in to see Edna, at Sunshine Health Foods, my favorite little health food store in the financial district of San Francisco. (Sorry she doesn’t have a website or I would include the link)
Anyway, I was asking her about wheat grass and she told me that she recommends Pines Wheat Grass. Of course it’s pricey, at $38.95 a bottle, like most health foods. Before purchasing, I decided to go home and do some research.
This is what I found out:
Wheat Grass contains 16 vitamins, 13 minerals, 18 amino acids along with chlorophyll and enzymes.
Benefits:
Blood circulation
Detoxification
Anti-inflammation
Anti-bacterial
Blood production
Wound recovery
A common assumption is that the value of the product is compromised if it is not taken as a freshly squeezed juice.
Although it is highly recommended, growing your own Wheat Grass is tricky and can be quite time consuming.
As it turns out, freeze-drying Wheat Grass, preserves its maximum live enzyme values and nutritional content. Most research has shown that the form in which you take it, scarcely affects its nutritional impact.
In the end, it appears that whichever form of Wheat Grass you choose (fresh, powder or juice powder), is more a matter of - what is most convenient for you - and has less to do with the actual nutritional value of the choice.
So far, I have not read of any negative side effects, although you should always read the label and opt for the purest organic form you can find. Oh, and be sure to buy some juice to conceal the taste! Being healthy always comes with a price!
