There's no disputing that velvet is the new 'it' fabric for fall 2010!
Ever since it first appeared in Europe in the 13th century, velvet has been associated with nobility. So it's no wonder that velvet would claim its place as this season's most beloved material. Since fashion is generally moving away from the bold and the beautiful and more into the minimal and sleek, velvet adds the dimension of texture. It looks unmistakably gorgeous and compliments the female body.
If you know your velvet from your velour, you'll know that velvet is woven, traditionally using silk, while velour is its stretchier knit, usually cotton-based, cousin but make no mistake - under NO circumstances does the 2010 velvet trend extend to velour tracksuits!
On another note, velveteen is also similar to velvet - woven, though often from cotton.
How to Style Velvet for Fall 2010
Basically, there are no rules. Black velvet is sleek and minimalist, but colored velvets are making a comeback too. I think the colored velvets like burgundy wine, forest green and midnight blue are perfect for the romantic feel of fall.
Velvet dresses were prominent on almost every runway of major Fashion Weeks. The velvet minidress in a deep red or burgundy wine color is perfect for a night out or a prom party.
Feel free to combine with another velvet fabric, such as satin, chiffon, cloth.
Whether you prefer the darker or more subtle velvet or outrageous neon velvets this season, have fun with the fabric and get into its "super sensual feel" for fall 2010. It's bound to make you feel plush and gorgeous on the inside and out come September.
