On Sept. 11, 1972, the very first passenger embarked on the very first BART line, which ran between MacArthur and Fremont stations.
Since that fateful day, millions of people have turned to the Bay Area Rapid Transit System to get them to work, home or the next Giants game.
It’s time for new trains. But building them won’t be cheap: BART estimates it will cost more than $3 billion to replace all 775 cars.
Right now, three companies are in the running to build the new fleet. One is in France, one is in South Korea, and third is in Canada.
