Quick note from Dr. Boyce:
Hey peeps - I plan to speak at the Circle of Sisters Expo in
New York City this Saturday. It's
an awesome event, so I hope you'll come out. Afterward, I plan to go downtown to join the protesters
who've made the decision to occupy Wall Street. I am incredibly excited that the spirit of activism has been
reawakened in our country.
The gap between the rich and the poor continues to
grow. We have record poverty
levels. Unemployment has
skyrocketed. Labor unions have
been systematically undermined.
The real wage of the average American worker has remained stagnant,
while corporate profits have shot through the roof.
As a Finance Professor who taught many of the students who
now serve as industry leaders on Wall Street, I am appalled by the fact that
some have not yet learned that if the power of capitalism is not harnessed, it
is ultimately meant to enslave and corrupt. I am a fan of free enterprise, but the truth is that if we
don't change the direction of our country and reduce our commitment to
irresponsible capitalism, America will ultimately destroy itself.
That is why I am going to join the folks on Wall
Street. Part of the reason I left
the business school here at Syracuse University is because I wasn't comfortable
teaching students that the most important task of a corporate manager is to
maximize shareholder wealth. Those
who believe that increasing their own wealth at the expense of the country are
myopic, naive and horrifically unpatriotic. Reckless capitalism may end up being the cause of our
collective demise.
If you are in New York City, I hope you'll come down to Wall
Street with us.
Until we meet again, stay strong, be blessed and get
educated.
