This weekend was the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. I wanted to take time to thank one of my favorite actors and humanitarians, Brad Pitt.
The Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans was one of the hardest hit areas. Almost 1,600 people were killed and 4,000 homes were lost. Enter, Brad Pitt and his Make it Right Foundation!
The Make it Right Foundation built the pink houses above (and pictured in yesterday's post). The houses looked like enormous, blank Monopoly houses. They could even be mistaken for art, because if you didn't know better, you might think that the famous artist, Christo, (the master environmental artist who wraps whole buildings, bridges and even islands in garish fabric), had been at work there. But the pink blocks are more than just artistic. They are symbolic stand-ins for the real houses to come.
A goal of the Foundation is to build at least 150 affordable, green and storm-resistant homes. The Make it Right Foundation has completed around 50 green homes to date.
