Eugenics - "The study and practice of selective breeding applied to humans with the aim of improving the species"
Most people have never even heard of Eugenics, which was formulated in 1883 by Sir Francis Galton (a cousin of Charles Darwin). It was very popular in the early decades of the 20th century and was practiced and promoted by governments around the world.
Galton's theory was to improve the human race by controlling population and his belief was that the less intelligent were more fertile than the more intelligent. This theory eventually led to practices which included: genetic screening, birth control, promoting differential birth rates, marriage restrictions, segregation (racial and segregation of the mentally ill from the rest of the population), compulsory sterilization, forced abortion and genocide.
The practice was largely abandoned shortly after WWII due to its negative association with Hitler and Nazi Germany, however the Eugenics movement did not die. The principal manifestations of Eugenics, racism and abortion, still exist today.
Eugenics continues as a driving force in global population policy as well as American foreign policy. It is the force which drives much of the environmentalist movement, welfare policy and health care. Eugenics is evident in anthropology, sociology, psychology and all of the social sciences as well as much literature.
