Vogue Italia Launches Black Vogue
Reaction to Vogue Italia's latest 'black issue' is electrifying the industry, forcing the fashion world to reconsider its resistance to using non-white models.Eighteen models were photographed for the issue they included Naomi Campbell, Iman, Tyra Banks, Liya Kebede, Jourdan Dunn, Alek Wek and Pat Cleveland.
To put it bluntly, size and race are two elephants in the room that no one wants to admit they see. Talks of slavery, obesity, eating disorders, and classicism still make us uncomfortable.
Vogue Italia has recently launched a trio of new websites showcasing the topics-du-jour of the fashion industry. Vogue Curvy provides a glimpse into normal(?) and plus-size beauty, with features on Crystal Renn, Christina Hendricks and America Ferrera.
Vogue Black provides insight on beauty of color, with a headline reading "Know Your 'Fro" and profiles on Tyra Banks and Grace Jones.
Vogue Talents takes a look at up-and-coming designers and encourages users to submit their work.
Other websites have already responded well to Vogue's trifecta. President of OneStopPlus.com Stephanie Sobel said, "We are extremely excited about the launch of Vogue Italia's curvy site, as this is yet another example of the ways in which plus size women are being empowered and respected as trendsetters in the industry, as much as their size 0 counterparts. This is an important move and could be the catalyst for higher end designers and media to cater to real women."
Now there's something for everyone. How-Divine!
