Here We Go Again
People, we have got to get over this obsession with being thin! The average dress size in America is a size 14. So, now there is a big controversy over the new Lane Bryant commercial, which the company claims was rejected based on the size of their model. Looks to me like ABC and FOX are afraid of big boobies, as they both decided to pull a Lane Bryant ad depicting a rubenesque model in some sexy lingerie. Personally I don't know if any sexy lingerie belongs on TV but fair is fair. So, I'm not sure exactly what is so offensive about this particular commercial.
Lane Bryant stated on their blog, Inside Curve that they knew the ad was sexy, but did not think it was any more sexy than some of the ads already airing on those networks, or even some of the material on the TV shows they air. Yes, these are the very same networks that have the scantily clad housewives so desperate that they seduce every man on the block and air the Victoria Secret commercials which feature models prancing around in lingerie leaving very little to the imagination, steaming up TV screens and baring nearly everything but their souls! Also how many times has FOX shown Bart Simpson's animated ass? All this in what they call the "family hour". Tsk Tsk!
Lane Bryant spoke out in their blog saying that ABC and FOX took the matter of defining beauty into their own hands and decided not to air the commercial. Lane Bryant wanted to air it during Dancing With the Stars on ABC (which seems appropriate since most of the women contestants are wearing little more than their bras and panties) anyway they refused, while FOX wanted edits to be made and only decided to air the ad during the final 10 minutes of American Idol after Lane Bryant said they would pull the ad.
It appears to me that the only difference is the SIZE of the models. Does this sound like a double standard to you?

I wonder when we'll get over our "size-ism". Crazy comment on our society - aren't both of these women beautiful in their own way? No wonder I have co-workers with daughters who are 11 years old and have eating disorders...
Sad state of affairs and as usual the mainstream media plays a big part. I think we're making some progress though. Folks have to speak out!
