Pint Size Fashion Maven

There is a very quirky little fashion blogger that I follow.  Her name is Tavi Gevinson and she is 13 years old. Yes, I said Thirteen.  But here's the thing. Tavi has been writing her fashion blog, called Style Rookie, since she was 11.  She is 4'6 and lives in Chicago with her parents. Who, by the way, didn't have a clue what their precocious little 6th grader was doing until one day she asked them for permission to appear in an issue of the NY Times. Tavi has taken the fashion world by storm and is quite the style maker herself. She chooses to dress in over sized haute couture with thrift store finds, mixing and matching pieces I think could only come from the creative mind of a 13 year old. And she loves hats!

Today she has over 50,000 readers and she has so many followers on her blog (estimated at 4 million) that she has reached the maximum capacity and I cannot follow her automatically. I have to actually go to her website everyday to see what she is posting about that day.

Tavi has appeared on magazine covers, hangs out with some of the hottest fashion designers and has been a guest at numerous fashion shows. She has her own line of T-Shirts and is a muse for designers in Tokyo. She has blogged on Fashion Week in 2009 and 2010.

Tavi, who also has sophisticated taste in music, has a keen sense of fashion, far beyond her years. Her commentary is quite good. To be honest, her knowledge of fashion is a bit too deep for me at times, which feels kind of weird, considering her age, but I always come away with a smile. As a matter of fact, her writing, filled with punchy little quips is so insightful that at one point it caused many people to question whether she was really 12 and the writer of the blog.

I think it is amazing and quite wonderful to see people recognize their gifts early on. At 13 Tavi says she doesn't take fashion too seriously because it's always going to change. Probably a great lesson to learn about life in general, wouldn't you say?
