Did you know we only wear about 20% of what we have in closets? Remember the golden rule of closet etiquette: If you haven't worn it in 2 years, GET RID OF IT!
Ask Yourself
- Do I feel comfortable in it?
- Does it fit? Dress for the body you have now, not the one you are hoping to get.
- Is it stylish, does it represent my personal style and my lifestyle?
- Is it easy to maintain?
Spring is an excellent time to get things in order and what better day than today to start.
Step One:
Make an assessment of the type of closet you have. If you have limited space you may want to get a closet armoire, a portable closet, or other helpful pieces of closet furniture.
Now make 3 piles.
Things to keep, things to dispose of, things to store in another place.
Have plenty of garbage bags on hand.
Step Two:
If you haven't heard by now, throw away all of those WIRE hangers!
Purchase some nice hangers. There are many types of hangers on the market. Pick ones that suit your taste and your budget. They are the foundation of a well organized and visually appealing closet.
These are beautiful padded hangers, but I use
Non-Slip Ultra Thin hangers - in pink, black & mint green
Step Three:Utilize drawer organizers, belt hangers, shoe storage and jewelry boxes
Step Four:
Make sure you have good lighting. If you need additional light, add it.
Step Five:
For storage use pretty boxes
Step Six:
Hang shirts and blouses going in the same direction.
Button at least the top button to help them hang neatly and evenly on the hanger.
Step Seven:
Use trouser/pant hangers.
Step Eight:
Hooks, hooks and more hooks. You can never have too many hooks. Put them everywhere to hang scarves, hats, jackets. You can also use hooks to hang your jewelry. Another alternative for hooks are over the door hangers.
Step Nine:
Prioritize your clothing. Put frequently worn items toward the front and store seldom worn articles toward the back or on higher shelves.
Step Ten:
Don't be afraid to personalize your closet with photos and/or other memorabilia. I also use scented shelf liners and sweet smelling deodorizers and sachets.
I think a closet should be an extension of who you are, clean, organized and with a touch of style.
And yep, these are photos of my very own closet.

As always, stylist and right on!
Wow very neat. I need to do that. I just bought those slim hangers from Costco! I LOVE them.
Okay, first I have to admit that I have more clothes than the law allows. And I keep saying I'm gonna get rid of lots of them for various reasons.
I'm getting there but still not THERE yet. LOL
But I'm soooooooooooo glad I read this post.
Michael's (craft store) had the photo/storage boxes on sale for $1 each. I got 5, thinking I had photos that needed storing.
Wellllllllllllllllllllll, it seems I've STORED all my photos already. Silly me!
But NOWWWWWWWWWWWWW I have extra boxes. And NOW I know what to do with them.
There are some things in my armoire (and on my dresser) that can go in those boxes.
Thanks much! :)
you're welcome. My closet looks a lot better and I can finally get all the way in.
